Most people notice two things first: how little it smells, and how it changes a room.
Claypaint’s high clay content gives it a soft, ultra-flat matt finish unlike any conventional emulsion — a still, velvety surface that absorbs and enriches light rather than reflecting it. It gives walls depth and calm, the quality our customers describe when they say a room simply feels different once it’s on. It’s the reason people who try it rarely go back.
It is breathable and hygroscopic: vapour-permeable, so moisture passes through rather than being trapped, and moisture-regulating, so it naturally absorbs and releases humidity to help balance the feel of a room. That makes it genuinely at home everywhere — but especially valuable on lime plaster, in older properties, and anywhere prone to condensation, where sealing a wall with ordinary plastic paint causes damp, blown plaster and peeling.
It’s made with water-based ingredients, free from oils and acrylics, virtually odourless, and carries the EU Ecolabel for environmental excellence across its whole life cycle.
The breathability, in numbers:
• Water Vapour Resistance (Sd): 0.02m — Vapour Permeability Class 1 (highly permeable)
• Moisture Vapour Transmission: 1,115 g/m² per day (a typical emulsion manages just 400–500)

Suitable over lime, gypsum plaster, brick, wallpaper, wood, most mineral surfaces and sound previously-painted surfaces.
Because Claypaint is static resistant, it reduces the build-up of airborne dust and allergens — which is why many allergy and asthma sufferers find they get on well with it. With virtually no VOCs and no lingering smell, you can paint a room and sleep in it the same night. It’s also vegan and never tested on animals.
A few things worth knowing, so you get the best from it:
• New plaster and lime need patience — let them cure fully first. Mist-coat fresh, absorbent plaster with a first coat thinned with clean water.
• It usually needs no primer — though a Bonding or Isolating Primer helps on stained, patchy or unknown surfaces. (Any primer slightly reduces overall breathability, so on lime we keep them to a minimum.)
• It can look patchy while drying — that’s completely normal. Let each coat dry fully before the next.
• Slight shade variation between batches is natural with real clay — mix tins together and avoid starting a fresh tin mid-wall.
• Being hygroscopic, the surface can mark or deepen slightly where it absorbs moisture — this normally fades as it dries.
• Marks often lift with a pencil eraser or very fine emery paper — test a hidden spot first.
