An Architect's Guide to Georgian Interior Colour

Georgian interiors were built on balance, symmetry and proportion. High ceilings, elegant sash windows, ornate architraves and refined plasterwork created light-filled, gracious rooms — and the colours followed suit: soft sky blues, gentle pastels, peachy tones, delicate greens and warm, earthy neutrals.

The effect is understated elegance. Georgian colour isn't loud; it lets the architecture — the mouldings, the cornices, the proportions — do the talking, with paint providing a calm, refined backdrop.

As a chartered architect specialising in heritage and conservation, I find the Georgian palette one of the most versatile for period homes: soft enough to feel bright and spacious, warm enough to feel welcoming, and timeless enough to suit modern living.
